hi there

this isn't really an update

i just wanted to post this "review" or whatever

of phil blankenship's "sex magik"

a cd that is just mr. blankenship

(yup, i'm nasty)

reading the lyrics of blood sugar sex magik

here it is:

There's nothing quite as confounding, though, as my favorite recent spoken-word work: Phil Blankenship's Sex Magik. Blankenship has made tons of great noise as the Cherry Point and released tons of great noise through his Troniks label. But Sex Magik is in a category all its own. It's an unaccompanied, song-by-song recitation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' super-selling album Blood Sugar Sex Magic. The concept is absurd enough to make you laugh before you even hear it, and some of the tracks do have moments of genuine hilarity.

But much of Sex Magik is gripping, with Blankenship's insistent, maniacally-focused speech finding tension in lyrics I always assumed were fluff. Rawly recorded and rawly delivered, the lines are torn from their funk-pop origins like limbs from a carcass, resulting in the rare piece of concept art that's actually visceral and immediate. (Blankenship fan Zola Jesus agrees). If experimental spoken word continues to grow, it'll be through bizarre ideas like this one. Thank Blankenship for finding one that no one else would have imagined. --Marc Masters

if you didn't want to read the above two paragraphs

they can be summarized thusly:

"i, the author, have no sense of humor"

"and am responsible for everything being shitty"

rawly recorded and rawly delivered?????

FUCK YOU MARC MASTERS

this has been a dave insult maybe?
